Yes, you can start kickboxing even if you feel unfit, nervous or completely inexperienced. You do not need to get fit before your first class. Fuzion’s adult sessions welcome complete beginners, and you can build your fitness and skills gradually through regular training.

What a nervous beginner should know

  • You do not need previous martial arts experience.

  • Your fitness can improve through training.

  • Gloves are available to borrow.

  • Your first free trial should be Adult Kickboxing rather than Technical Sparring.

  • One or two sessions per week is a sensible adult starting point.

You do not need previous experience

Many adults arrive at their first class without any martial arts background. Feeling unsure is normal when you do not yet know the movements, the people or what the session will involve.

A beginner is not expected to arrive with polished technique. The purpose of training is to learn. You will be shown the movements, practise them and improve through repetition.

Do I need to get fit before starting kickboxing?

No. Waiting until you feel “fit enough” can easily become a reason never to begin. Kickboxing itself is a way to improve your fitness over time.

Start at a manageable level, listen to the coaching and take sensible breaks when needed. As the movements become more familiar, you can gradually work with greater confidence and intensity. There is no need to match someone who has trained for years.

What happens in a beginner-friendly class?

Classes develop practical skills such as stance, guard, movement, punches, kicks and pad work. You may work independently and with a partner, with coaching throughout the session.

Fuzion has a welcoming mix of abilities. Experienced members were beginners once too, and the aim is to help people learn, not to catch them out.

You can review the available options on the adult classes page. Technical Sparring is open to all ability levels, but it is not used as somebody’s first free-trial class. A brand-new visitor should begin with Adult Kickboxing.

What should I bring?

Wear comfortable black sports clothing, such as a black T-shirt with black shorts, leggings or tracksuit bottoms. Most people use indoor trainers, although some train barefoot. Bring water, a towel and a willingness to learn.

Gloves are available to borrow, so you do not need to buy equipment before deciding whether you want to continue. Our beginner equipment guide explains what is useful later.

How often should an adult beginner train?

Rich normally recommends one or two sessions a week for adults. One weekly class is a sensible way to start if you are returning to exercise or managing a busy schedule. Two sessions provide more opportunities to repeat the skills while they are fresh.

The best routine is the one you can maintain. Consistency matters more than starting with an ambitious schedule that quickly becomes overwhelming.

What if I feel nervous about walking in?

Try to treat the free trial as a chance to experience the class, not a test you must pass. You are not committing to being the fittest person in the room. You are simply giving yourself an opportunity to learn.

If you have a question before attending, contact Rich and ask. Knowing what to expect can make the first step feel much easier.

Frequently asked questions

Am I too unfit for a kickboxing class?

No. Start at a manageable pace and let your fitness develop through training. Speak to Rich before the class if there is anything relevant the coaching team should know.

Will I have to spar in my first class?

No. Technical Sparring is not used as a first free-trial class. A new adult visitor is guided towards Adult Kickboxing.

Do I need my own gloves?

No. Fuzion has gloves available for beginners to borrow. You can consider buying your own after your first few sessions if you decide to continue.

What if I make mistakes?

Mistakes are part of learning. Listen, ask questions and keep practising. Nobody begins with perfect technique.

Try a class before deciding

You do not have to feel completely confident before you begin. Book a free adult trial at Fuzion, meet the group and experience the training for yourself.
